Since 1974, The Johnson Atelier has been a hub where artists, fabricators, and innovators collaborate to bring bold ideas to life. Founded on tradition and classical methods while embracing cutting-edge technology, our expert team works across every stage of production, including modeling, milling, painting, finishing, and installation, to ensure each project reaches its full potential. We offer full project management from concept to completion, whether it begins as a sketch on a napkin or a fully developed plan, we have the expertise to transform ideas into finished sculptures.
Our partnership with Grounds For Sculpture unites the two visionary institutions founded by artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson. Together, we provide artists with the tools, expertise, and environment to create work that is technically exceptional and deeply resonant, inspiring audiences for generations.

Seward johnson
Seward Johnson founded the Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture in 1974 to help sculptors overcome two problems. The first was to help sculptors retain control over their artwork. The second was to open access to previously guarded information on production techniques.
The Johnson Atelier rapidly became an incubator for advancing art techniques and technology. From all over the world, artists gathered at the Johnson Atelier to collectively offer all phases of production. This gathering of artists provided a stimulating and sometimes unorthodox environment in which everyone’s artistic practice could bloom through collaboration, dialogue, and discovery.
Hundreds of artists have benefitted from the Johnson Atelier’s unique apprenticeship program. They have come to the Atelier by different means but all for the same reason — to learn and transition from academic life to the art world.
