Susan Pullman Brooks

"Pitchfork Lightning" is an iteration and expansion of a previous artwork created by the artist, incorporating vines and found objects, including a pitchfork's pole and tine. The original composition, comprised of natural and found elements, has been enlarged and transformed into bronze through the skillful metal fabrication and sand casting techniques employed by The Seward Johnson Atelier. While renowned artist David Smith integrated assemblages of found metal objects and agricultural tools into his Agricola and Tanktotems series, Susan Pullman Brooks takes a distinct approach. Instead of emphasizing the individual shapes of the objects in an intentional and anthropomorphic manner, Brooks weaves them into a complex composition, wherein the focus lies on the entirety rather than the sum of its individual parts.

The term "Pitchfork Lightning" refers to a natural occurrence in which a single lightning strike branches out into multiple series of intricate patterns. In the sculpture, a sense of equilibrium emanates from a sturdy core, coalescing with a dynamic sense of movement and energy.
